John E. Conner


Age 70, in San Francisco, California on October 9, 2012.

Son of the late Earl Conner Jr. and Adele Nichols Conner. Loving brother of Judith A. Pocock and Jean L. Knight and favorite uncle to Jay N. Pocock, Jennifer A. Pocock, Jill N. Betz, Kelly J. Knight and Benjamin J. Knight. John was born August 18, 1942 in San Francisco and attended local elementary and junior high schools, Lincoln High School and City College of San Francisco. He graduated with a degree in Recreation Administration from California State University, Chico and earned a Masters in Recreation and Leisure Studies from California State University San Francisco and a Masters in Public Administration from Golden Gate University. He worked for the Oakland Recreation Department for one year and thereafter worked for the City of San Francisco Recreation and Park Department for the next 32 years. John held several positions with the City. He was a Recreation Director, the Municipal Stadiums Manager, a Senior Management Assistant and Assistant Public Guardian. He retired in 1999 due to health conditions. John was an active member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church for 50 years and was a Mason since 1981. He was a member of California Lodge No. 1, F&AM, San Francisco Scottish Rite and Asiya Shriners.

John was a hero in his fight against cancer and survived over 30 years with this disease. He was a role model to all in his accomplishments in life - never focusing on his own health concerns but always having an upbeat attitude and caring for others.

A memorial service will be held at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 201 Eucalyptus Drive, San Francisco, on Saturday, November 3rd at 11:00 a.m. Donations may be made to the John Wayne Cancer Institute, 2200 Santa Monica Boulevard, Santa Monica, California 90404 or Lakeside Presbyterian Church.
